Our Spring Campaign

A concrete oasis shrouded in lush gardens, Ground House 107R is the perfect backdrop for our new arrivals. Brutalist qualities are merged with Japandi-inspired interiors to create a truly unique location. On the Far North Coast of New South Wales, the property offers a gateway to Byron Bay and its incredible surroundings.

Ground House 107R

Designer and builder David Fewson created the off-form concrete building as a guest space, to complement the verdant
landscaping of the twenty acre property (a former macadamia farm). A multi-generational project, his wife Jane and daughter Hannah are credited for the interior design, which is peppered with furniture by David as well.

“All the form work for the curving concrete pillars were hand drawn, cut and built. Every element of the space is hand crafted, from the massive bespoke steel sliding doors, to the brass and reeded glass light fittings,” Hannah says. “I think in this way it’s a beautiful pushback against current interior design trends that seem to insist on the inclusion of expensive ‘it’ pieces to validate a room”.

Careful consideration is obvious. All elements inside and outside the house work in tandem with the natural environment, rather than intruding on it. “We wanted to keep the palette muted and neutral with lots of texture to soften and warm the smooth coolness of the concrete. The rust red of the powder coated doors and windows was chosen as a match to the fallen eucalypt leaves on the site,” Hannah says.

Hannah Fewson shares her favourite spots around town.

What makes the Byron lifestyle so special?

The diversity and inclusivity of people in the region. The incredible natural scenery from the coast to the hinterland to the rainforest and national parks further inland.

What are some of your favourite places to shop?

We don’t shop much to be honest and we try to keep our consumer footprint pretty low. Our biggest expenditure is probably coffee at Harvest in Newrybar.

What’s your favourite spot for breakfast?

Doma in Federal is special if you fancy a bit of a drive.

What about drinks with friends?

The Eltham is our local and a great spot for everyone. It's actually where I met my husband when I worked behind the bar, so it holds a special place in my heart.

What’s the ultimate date night spot?

Ciao Mate in Bangalow is a favourite for pizza and cocktails. We also love Kouzina for authentic Greek food in the Byron industrial estate. Its little gravel courtyard full of potted geraniums and mosaics has a transportive effect.

What do you think is the best kept secret in town?

Lennox Head gelato can’t be missed.

Where’s your favourite spot on the coast?

Whites or Kings beaches on a rainy winter day.

And somewhere that’s nice for a walk or hike?

I love to head inland and explore the
forests.
